2007 AANS/CNS Section on Tumors/BrainLAB International Fellowship

Kazuhiko Kurozumi, MD, PhD

Host Institution: Ohio State University
Sponsor: E. Antonio Chiocca, MD

Research Title: Glioma Extracellular Matrix Modulation to Enhance Oncolytic Viral Therapy

On behalf of the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors leadership and review committee, we would like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Kazuhiko Kurozumi. It is our pleasure to award him the inaugural 2007 AANS/CNS Section on Tumors/BrainLAB International Fellowship. His research will be a valuable contribution to the field of neurosurgical oncology as we in the specialty work together to make critical advances in the diagnosis and treatment of CNS tumors.

A message from Dr. Kurozumi …

I am coming from Department of Neurological Surgery, Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Science, in Japan. I will work in the Department of Neurological Surgery at The Ohio State University. I will research gene and cell therapy for brain tumors, focusing in particular on the oncolytic herpes virus vector for targeting gliomas by investigating OV-induced changes in the tumor microenvironment. I have identified a synergistic enhancement of OV therapy with anti-angiogenic treatment and now propose to study this mechanistically in detail with the hope of identifying a rational treatment paradigm for the treatment of malignant gliomas.
